Who can participate?

Players of all ages and skill levels are welcome — beginners, juniors, club players and competitive adults alike. No FIDE rating is required for the weekly blitz or the monthly championship unless specifically announced otherwise.

Is a FIDE rating required?

No. A FIDE rating is not required to participate in any of our events unless it is specifically stated in the announcement for a particular tournament.

Is the weekly tournament FIDE-rated?

No. The Chess Cafe Kolkata Weekly Blitz Arena is an independent club tournament. Events will not be described as FIDE-rated unless official FIDE rating approval has been confirmed and specifically announced.

What is the weekly entry fee?

The weekly blitz entry fee is ₹150 per player.

Where should I pay the weekly entry fee?

Entry fees must be paid directly at the café. No online payment is required for the weekly tournament.

What is the reporting time?

Players must report at 11:30 AM sharp. Please arrive on time to ensure your pairing eligibility.

What happens if I arrive late?

Late arrival may affect your pairing eligibility for the first round. Please report at 11:30 AM sharp. If you are unable to arrive on time, contact the organiser in advance.

What happens if fewer players attend?

Accepted Answer

The tournament may not be conducted if an insufficient number of players attend. The organiser's decision regarding tournament conduct, format, postponement or cancellation will be final.

How is the weekly tournament format decided?

If 16 or more players participate, a Swiss League format (normally 5–6 rounds) will be used. If 15 or fewer players participate, the format may be round-robin, group round-robin, Swiss League or another suitable format based on attendance. The final format will be announced before Round 1.

What is the time control?

The weekly blitz uses a time control of 5 minutes + 3 seconds increment per move (5+3 Blitz).

How are weekly prizes decided?

The prize structure depends on the total number of participants. Final prizes will be announced before Round 1. Prizes may include cash, trophies, medals, certificates, café rewards or special recognition.

Light refreshments will be provided during the weekly tournament. Refreshment availability may vary by event.

Will every game be recorded?

Accepted Answer

Not every game is guaranteed to be recorded. Selected games may be video recorded, and tournament moments may be photographed. Highlights may be published on our official YouTube, Facebook and Instagram channels.

How does the weekly point system work?

Points are awarded after each weekly event: 1st Place = 10 points, 2nd Place = 8 points, 3rd Place = 6 points, Participation = 2 points. These points accumulate over the monthly cycle and determine qualification for the Month-End Mega Final.

How do I qualify for the Month-End Mega Final?

The top weekly point scorers qualify for the Month-End Mega Final. The number of qualifiers and any minimum participation requirements will be announced for each monthly cycle. Management's decision on qualification is final.

Can children participate?

Yes, children are very welcome. Players of all ages may participate subject to organiser approval. Parents or guardians are encouraged to be present for junior participants.

Can parents remain at the venue?

Yes, parents and guardians are welcome to remain at the venue. Please be mindful of players' concentration and follow any seating or conduct instructions from the organiser.

Can I use a mobile phone during the tournament?

Mobile phones must remain switched off or stored according to organiser instructions. Using a phone during a game may result in disqualification. Electronic assistance is strictly prohibited.
